It started in a small flat, with no clients and an email sent at 3am.

Vexo wasn't planned in a boardroom. It was built out of necessity, by people who had everything to lose by giving up, and it's why we work the way we do today.

Broke, and looking for a way out

In 2023 I was broke. It was just me and my partner in a small flat, and I was looking for pretty much any way to make money. I was working a job I hated, purely to keep the bills paid.

Then I noticed something that wouldn't leave me alone. Big agencies were charging local businesses ridiculous prices for work I already knew how to do. Websites, systems, the things that bring a business its clients. Same outcome, a fraction of the cost, if someone was willing to do it properly.

That gap became Vexo. Agency-quality work, priced fairly, built by people who actually care whether it works.

No clients. No name. No map.

Nobody tells you how quiet the beginning is.

No portfolio to point to. No clients to vouch for us. No mentor, no playbook, no direct path. Every evening after a shift at a job I hated, I'd sit down and build, learn, rewrite and start again, not knowing if any of it would ever pay.

Some weeks it felt like shouting into an empty room. The rejections were hard. The silence was harder. When you send message after message and nothing comes back, you start to wonder if the problem is you.

But going back wasn't an option. So we kept turning up, every day, whether anybody was watching or not.

The email I almost didn't send

One night I couldn't sleep. It was around 3am, and I wrote a cold email to a business I'd never spoken to. I didn't think anything of it. I'd sent plenty before that went nowhere. I pressed send and went to bed.

They replied.

That reply became our first client. One email, at an hour when nobody else was working, from someone nobody had heard of.

It taught me the lesson Vexo is built on: the opportunity goes to whoever shows up first. Not the biggest name or the cheapest quote. Whoever is there when it matters. Our first client came from showing up when nobody else did. Now we build that into every business we work with, so they're always the one who replies first.

I quit the job. Vexo got everything.

For a long time, Vexo was built in the hours around a job. Not any more. I quit to go all in, because the businesses we work with deserve people who are fully committed to them, not fitting them in around something else.

Today Vexo builds bespoke websites and CRM systems for property, legal, healthcare and trade firms. We built our own CRM, HALO, because off-the-shelf software kept failing the businesses we cared about. We're still independent, still answerable to our clients and nobody else.

And we haven't forgotten the small flat. Every fair quote, every straight answer and every enquiry we help a client win back comes from remembering what it's like to need the work.
