How to choose a web design agency in Hull: ten questions to ask.
Most agencies look good in a portfolio. The differences show up later: who owns the site, what you pay after launch, and whether it brings in any work. These are the ten questions we'd ask if we were hiring an agency ourselves, including the ones that make agencies uncomfortable.
Before you look at designs
- 1. Is it bespoke or a template? Both can work, but you should know which you're paying for. Ask to see a site they built from scratch.
- 2. Who owns the website, the content and the domain? The answer should be you, in writing.
- 3. What will I pay after launch? Hosting, updates, support and anything else, as a monthly figure, in writing.
- 4. Who will I actually deal with? One named person, or a different account manager every few months?
The questions that separate good from pretty
- 5. How will people find the site? Ask what they do for local SEO: schema markup, Google Business Profile, area and service pages, page speed.
- 6. What happens to an enquiry after someone clicks send? If the answer is 'it goes to your inbox', ask how you'll know it was followed up.
- 7. How fast is it on a phone? Ask them to run one of their own sites through Google's PageSpeed Insights while you watch.
- 8. Can I see results, not just screenshots? Enquiries, rankings or bookings before and after, even anonymised.
The uncomfortable ones
- 9. What won't you do? A good agency will tell you where its strengths end, and what you don't need to buy.
- 10. What happens if we part ways? You should be able to take your site, content and data with you without a fight.
If an agency is vague on any of these, that's your answer.

How much does a website cost from a Hull agency?
Bespoke sites from an agency typically start from a few thousand pounds, plus monthly costs for hosting and support. Always ask for both figures in writing.
Should I choose a local web design agency?
Being local helps with in-person meetings and local SEO knowledge, but the questions above matter more than the postcode.
What should a web design contract include?
Ownership of the site, content and domain, a fixed price and timeline, what's included after launch, and how you can leave.
